Murmur privacy

Local dictation in Murmur 0.2.4. October 22, 2026.

Murmur is a local voice dictation app from Salty Panda LLC. This describes version 0.2.4, October 22, 2026. No account is required.

Microphone and recognition

The microphone starts only when you choose dictation or live preview. Recognition runs on your Mac. Murmur does not save raw microphone audio or upload it for transcription. Finish, Cancel, Close and Quit end capture. A pinned idle bar does not mean the microphone is on.

Words, settings and models

Recognized words and the previous attempt remain in memory for copying until you clear them or quit. Murmur does not write transcript history to disk. Preferences and downloaded models are stored locally in your Mac’s Application Support folder.

When you dictate into another app, Murmur checks the destination and uses macOS Accessibility or clipboard paste to insert your words. The destination app and any clipboard tools you use have their own data practices. Murmur does not press Enter or send the message for you. Remote desktops expose the viewer window rather than the remote text field.

Downloads and network access

Language and optional model downloads need an internet connection. Download providers receive ordinary request information, such as an IP address. Model weights keep their own licenses. Recognition stays local; Murmur has no analytics or cloud rewriting fallback. Apple’s system services have their own privacy practices.

Your choices

Manage microphone and Accessibility permissions in macOS System Settings. Choose your input, speech engine and optional downloads in Murmur. Copy only lets you keep recognized words for manual insertion. Clear the transcript or quit to remove words held in memory.
